Atlantic Canada’s Bay of Fundy is home to the highest tides in the world.

In each 12 hour tidal period, more than 100 billion tonnes of water are forced in and out of the bay,
making it one of North America’s best potential sites for tidal power generation.

But a challenging environment and a complex seabed have hampered dreams
to convert the Fundy’s tidal power into green electricity.

Until now.

Steffen Allan Shelley : A Biography

After graduating from Acadia University, Mr. Shelley completed his engineering degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland and has gone on to accumulate over sixteen years of international experience in offshore Structural Engineering and Naval Architecture.

The early part of his career was spent surveying and fixing vessels on the great lakes and east coasts. Then, after one winter of shoveling too much snow, Mr. Shelley departed for the warmer climate of Mississippi where he spent some years engineering and building tugs, barges and work boats, and also chasing after several interesting naval vessel programmes.

After surviving Hurricane Katrina, Mr. Shelley moved to Texas to work in the offshore industry for one of the premier hull, mooring and riser engineering firms in the world (Houston Offshore Engineering, HOE). As a Principal Structural Engineer, he analyzes and designs everything from equipment supports to key structural connections of platforms. In addition, he has a highly regarded ability to understand projects from well casing to shore terminal and is much sought after to execute the same.

GUEST SPEAKER FOR 2010 - ONDREJ TOMEK

tl_files/sites/engineering/resources/pictures/Ondrej Photo 2.jpg

ONDREJ TOMEK

NASCAR ENGINE DESIGNER- Ondrej Tomek graduated from the Ivan Curry School of Engineering in 1995, since then he has pursued a career in internal combustion engine design and development. During the last nine years with the Racing group at General Motors, Ondrej has been intimately involved with the design and development of several clean sheet NASCAR racing engines.

In 1997, the R07 engine was approved for competition in all NASCAR racing series and replaced the Small Block Chevrolet engine which had roots to the original 1953 production engine. This new R07 engine has powered Chevrolet sponsored cars to more than 50 race wins in the top level Cup series, and has remained undefeated in manufacturer and driver championship titles. In 2007, the R07 was named race engine design of the year by RaceTech magazine.

Ondrej's presentation will provide an insight into the world of NASCAR, and how Chevrolet, and other manufacturer's approach this top level of car racing. Ondrej will also discuss some of the finer details of race engine design and development including the latest and greatest technologies being used today.
